Beastmaster is an offlaner who applies pressure in lane and across the map with summoned creatures. His beasts help find enemies, farm quickly, and attack buildings, while Primal Roar provides a reliable way to initiate fights. In this article, we’ll cover Beastmaster counters for every position, items against him, and ways to stop his momentum.

Hero’s strengths

Beastmaster combines pressure from summoned creatures with single-target control. Wild Axes deal area damage, his beasts chase opponents and provide vision, and Primal Roar stuns a chosen enemy and knocks back others in its path. This allows Beastmaster to help his team find targets and push down lanes quickly.

The hero depends on summoned creatures and items to initiate fights. Area damage quickly clears his beasts, while strong counter-control prevents Beastmaster from freely choosing a target. If you don’t let his team start a fight on favorable terms, it’s harder for him to turn his advantage into results.

Best Heroes Against Beastmaster

Beastmaster almost always plays position 3—the offlane. He pressures lanes and looks for a target for Primal Roar, so heroes with area damage, protection from control, and the ability to quickly clear summoned creatures are useful against him.

Carry

  • Sven quickly clears beasts with Great Cleave and can deal damage to several targets at once. This makes it harder for Beastmaster to use his summons to apply pressure.
  • Medusa handles large numbers of units well thanks to her area attacks. Mana Shield helps her survive some of the initial damage and stay in the fight.

Mid

  • Kunkka quickly clears summoned creatures with Tidebringer and can control Beastmaster along with his team.
  • Leshrac deals area magic damage and quickly clears beasts from the lane. His abilities make it harder for Beastmaster to push toward buildings safely.

Offlaner

  • Underlord clears waves and summoned creatures with Firestorm. Pit of Malice can stop Beastmaster and his team if they try to force a fight.
  • Dawnbreaker Dawnbreaker’s ultimate ability, Solar Guardian, lets her instantly teleport to any ally anywhere on the map. This is crucial against Beastmaster: his ultimate, Primal Roar, instantly renders its target helpless, but Dawnbreaker can appear at their side just as quickly and either save her ally or damage the enemies.

Support

  • Earthshaker uses Beastmaster’s summoned units to empower Echo Slam. Fissure helps interrupt an attack or split up the opponents.
  • Winter Wyvern protects an ally from beast attacks with Cold Embrace. Winter’s Curse can turn the enemies’ attacks against their own team.

Hard Support

  • Enchantress can take control of one of Beastmaster’s neutral creeps with Enchant, weakening the pressure from his summons.
  • Shadow Demon saves a caught ally with Disruption and prevents Beastmaster from quickly following up on Primal Roar.

What to Build Against Beastmaster

  • Black King Bar protects against most abilities and control, although Primal Roar pierces spell immunity.
  • Lotus Orb helps dispel some negative effects from an ally and reflects targeted spells.
  • Force Staff helps you get out of a bad position and escape the beasts more quickly.
  • Crimson Guard reduces some of the physical damage from Beastmaster’s attacks and his summons.
  • Heaven’s Halberd temporarily disarms Beastmaster and prevents him from dealing damage with attacks.
  • Boots of Bearing help the team retreat or initiate a fight more quickly after Beastmaster has used Primal Roar.

How to Play Against Beastmaster at Different Stages

Laning

Try to clear Beastmaster’s beasts quickly and don’t let them surround your hero in lane. Watch out for damage from Wild Axes, and don’t stand near an ally if you could both be hit by the same ability. When Beastmaster has used his summons or spells, use the opening to apply pressure in return.

Mid Game

Don’t move around the map alone: Beastmaster can find a target with his beasts and initiate an attack with Primal Roar. Defend lanes with area abilities and place vision near tower approaches in advance. In a fight, clear summoned creatures first if they’re preventing your team from moving around.

Late Game

Keep a hero nearby who can protect a target from Primal Roar or help them retreat. Don’t spend all your abilities on the beasts if Beastmaster is ready to initiate a fight. After his ultimate, quickly respond with control or switch to his allies while his key ability is on cooldown.
