Legion Commander is a melee hero who starts fights and grows stronger by winning one-on-one duels. Duel forces the chosen target to fight her, and each victory permanently increases her attack damage. In this article, we’ll look at Legion Commander’s strengths and weaknesses, suitable heroes to pick against her in every role, useful items, and tactics for different stages of the game.
Hero’s Characteristics
Legion Commander combines initiation with physical damage. Blink Dagger helps her start a Duel unexpectedly, Press the Attack dispels negative effects from her, and Moment of Courage gives her a chance to counterattack and restore health. If Legion Commander regularly wins duels, her damage grows, making her harder to stop.
The hero’s main weakness is that an ally can save the target and interrupt her ultimate, while she herself often ends up close to enemies and takes the full force of their retaliation. Without Blink Dagger or suitable vision, it’s harder for her to find a target. Try not to leave heroes alone, don’t give Legion Commander easy duels, and save your disables or saves for her jump. Be mindful of Blade Mail: don’t mindlessly direct all your damage at her.
Best Heroes Against Legion Commander
Legion Commander most often plays position 3, the offlane, but she is also picked mid. Supports in positions 4 and 5 should be able to interrupt Duel or save an ally. Below are options for every role.
Carry
- Monkey King fights Legion Commander well in lane and can punish her for trying to start a Duel. Boundless Strike stuns the target, while Jingu Mastery helps win trades. Watch out for Blade Mail and avoid attacking while it’s active unless necessary.
- Ursa can survive a Duel thanks to Enrage and quickly deal damage in return. If Legion Commander doesn’t kill him right away, Ursa can turn the fight in his favor. Keep track of her movements in advance and don’t let her catch you without your ultimate ready.
Mid
- Outworld Destroyer can save himself or an ally with Astral Imprisonment, interrupting Duel. His damage is also dangerous to Legion Commander if she can’t reach him quickly and activate Blade Mail.
- Viper slows Legion Commander and prevents her from freely choosing a target. Nethertoxin can disable passive abilities, including Moment of Courage, while Viper Strike keeps her in a dangerous area.
Offlaner
- Abaddon can dispel some effects from an ally with Aphotic Shield and survive an attack thanks to Borrowed Time. This makes it harder for Legion Commander to build up damage quickly and helps the team respond to her initiation.
- Centaur Warrunner gives the team a way to retreat quickly with Stampede. Hoof Stomp helps stop Legion Commander after her jump, while his high health pool lets him survive her initial damage.
Support
- Shadow Demon can remove a target from the fight with Disruption if he reacts to Duel in time. This lets the team interrupt her ultimate and surround Legion Commander after her failed initiation.
- Vengeful Spirit can use Nether Swap to pull an ally out of a dangerous position or move Legion Commander herself into enemy disables. Magic Missile helps catch her after Duel ends.
Hard Support
- Dazzle saves an ally with Shallow Grave and prevents Legion Commander from ending Duel quickly. Poison Touch helps slow her after her jump, giving the team time to retreat and prepare a response.
- Winter Wyvern protects a target with Cold Embrace and can stop Legion Commander if allies are standing near her. Save your abilities for when she emerges from invisibility or jumps in with Blink Dagger.
What to Build Against Legion Commander
- Linken’s Sphere blocks Duel until its effect is removed by another targeted spell.
- Force Staff helps an ally get out of a dangerous position before Duel starts or escape after a failed initiation.
- Glimmer Cape can save a target if used before Legion Commander casts Duel.
- Heaven’s Halberd disarms Legion Commander and reduces her attack accuracy if she isn’t protected from the effect.
- Ghost Scepter helps a support survive physical damage during Duel, as long as the item’s effect isn’t dispelled.
How to Play Against Legion Commander at Different Stages
Laning
In lane, don’t stand near creeps if Legion Commander can use Press the Attack to win a trade. Try to keep your distance while her abilities are ready, and call for support if she uses an ability on creeps or an ally. Don’t leave your carry alone near Blink Dagger after the early levels. Controlling the wave and using consumables at the right time will help avoid unnecessary duels.
Mid Game
During the mid game, move around the map as a group and place vision on the approaches to farming heroes. Remember that Legion Commander can start a fight from the fog of war. Have a save ready for the target in advance rather than using it after Duel has already ended. If the enemy uses their ultimate without getting a kill, punish them quickly or take an objective on the map.
Late Game
In the late game, one successful Duel can decide the outcome of the match. Don’t go out on the lane alone, and don’t start a siege until you know where Legion Commander is. Keep Linken’s Sphere, defensive abilities, and disables ready, distributing them among your players. After Legion Commander has used Blink and Duel, your team has an opportunity to start the fight first and prevent her from choosing a favorable target.
