Pudge punishes poor positioning: one accurate Meat Hook turns a peaceful farm into a fight where you’re outnumbered. Let’s look at which heroes stop him from hooking isolated targets, how to survive Dismember, and how to play against Pudge from the laning stage through the late game.

Hero Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths: Pudge is dangerous thanks to his large health pool, Meat Hook’s pure damage, and Dismember’s control that pierces debuff immunity. Flesh Heap gradually makes him even tankier, while Rot makes it hard to escape after being pulled in.

Weaknesses: The hero’s weak points are his low armor early on, dependence on vision and hook accuracy, lack of mana, and vulnerability to damage that ramps up in a prolonged fight. If Pudge has to be the first to move through an open area, it’s much harder for him to land a hook.

Best Heroes Against Pudge

Pudge most often appears in the position four role, although he is also picked as a carry, mid, and offlaner. So a good counterpick should either safely survive his combo or quickly interrupt Dismember.

Carry

  • Ursa Pudge can’t stand next to Ursa for long: Fury Swipes quickly stacks up even against a huge health pool. Enrage helps Ursa survive Rot and return focus fire.
  • Lifestealer Rage protects against most magical damage, while Feast is especially useful against a hero with a high health pool. The main thing is not to get caught by Dismember before activating Rage.

Mid

  • Timbersaw Whirling Death reduces Pudge’s primary attribute, while Reactive Armor means Rot is nothing to fear. Timber can quickly get out of danger with Timber Chain.
  • Pangolier Constantly changes position and makes it hard to aim. Rolling Thunder can interrupt Dismember and disrupt Pudge’s slow-paced fights.

Offlaner

  • Slardar Pudge’s low base armor becomes a serious problem under Corrosive Haze. Slithereen Crush interrupts his ultimate and helps the team quickly finish off a target.
  • Doom Doom prevents Pudge from healing with Dismember and using defensive abilities. Infernal Blade deals significant damage against his large health pool.

Support

  • Clockwerk Battery Assault interrupts Dismember, while Power Cogs stop Pudge from staying right next to his victim. Clockwerk can also find him in the trees first.
  • Vengeful Spirit Magic Missile interrupts his ultimate’s channel, while Nether Swap pulls an ally out from under Pudge, even from a long distance.

Hard Support

  • Abaddon Aphotic Shield dispels many unpleasant effects and absorbs damage, while Borrowed Time makes it much harder to kill Abaddon with Dismember.
  • Oracle Fate's Edict protects against Rot, Fortune's End dispels positive effects, and False Promise saves an ally who has already been pulled in.

What to Buy Against Pudge

  • Force Staff Helps create distance after a hook or push an ally out of Rot’s area.
  • Glimmer Cape Reduces magical damage and gives you time to survive his combo.
  • Linken's Sphere Blocks Dismember, but does not protect against Meat Hook itself.
  • Lotus Orb Dispels some effects and forces Pudge to choose his ultimate target more carefully.
  • Spirit Vessel Reduces healing and is effective against a large health pool.
  • Silver Edge Disables Flesh Heap and makes it easier to focus Pudge down quickly.

How to Play Against Pudge at Different Stages

Laning

Place vision on side paths and don’t stand in line with trees where Pudge could be hiding. It’s safer to keep creeps between you and him. If he misses a hook, immediately take advantage of its long cooldown: pressure him or his lane partner while his main threat is unavailable.

Mid Game

Don’t walk alone through the dark parts of the map. Pudge is especially strong when the team has to enter a narrow passage. Place vision first, start fights from an open position, and save at least one stun for Dismember.

Late Game

Later in the game, Pudge becomes very tanky, but you can still ignore him after a missed hook and attack more dangerous targets. Don’t pour all your damage into his huge health pool without reducing his healing. Keep save items for your carry: a single Dismember through their defenses can decide a fight.
