Riki uses invisibility to get behind his target and trap them in Smoke Screen. To keep him from taking over the map, you need more than just Sentry Wards—you also need the right heroes, positioning, and items. Let’s go through everything in order.
Hero strengths and weaknesses
Strengths: Riki is dangerous thanks to his high mobility and physical damage from behind. Blink Strike lets him instantly reach a vulnerable support, Smoke Screen makes it difficult to cast abilities and causes attacks to miss, while Tricks of the Trade grants brief invulnerability and deals area damage.
Weaknesses: His main weaknesses are his low health, poor farming without successful kills, and reliance on invisibility. With True Sight, it’s much harder for Riki to choose when to engage and disengage.
Best heroes against Riki
Riki is most often picked as a position one, and less often as a position four. He is countered by heroes with area damage, long-duration disables, and abilities that reveal invisibility or don’t require precise target selection.
Carry
- Slardar He is rarely played as a carry, but Corrosive Haze completely shuts down Riki’s invisibility-based play, while Bash of the Deep prevents him from escaping.
- Bloodseeker Thirst reveals heroes with low health, while Rupture punishes Blink Strike and attempts to quickly leave a fight.
Mid
- Zeus Lightning Bolt grants True Sight in the target area, while his area magic damage can hit Riki even without regular attacks.
- Leshrac His constant damage around himself prevents Riki from safely standing nearby. Leshrac doesn’t rely on accurate attacks inside Smoke Screen.
Offlaner
- Axe Counter Helix triggers while Riki attacks, and Berserker's Call catches him even near allies and prevents him from escaping with Tricks of the Trade.
- Centaur Warrunner Return punishes frequent attacks, his high health is difficult to burn through, and Stampede helps the whole team escape the smoke.
Support
- Bounty Hunter Track reveals Riki and grants the team extra gold for killing him. Jinada helps win the battle for wards.
- Clockwerk Battery Assault works against a nearby invisible target, while Power Cogs limit the escape route after Blink Strike.
Hard support
- Disruptor Glimpse pulls Riki back after he jumps in, while Static Storm blocks off an area and prevents him from using Tricks of the Trade.
- Jakiro His area abilities check dangerous paths, slow attacks, and force Riki to leave Smoke Screen or take heavy damage.
What to build against Riki
- Sentry Ward The main and cheapest way to cover approaches to a fight with True Sight.
- Dust of Appearance Carry several charges: one often isn’t enough after Riki dispels it or gets away.
- Force Staff Gets an ally out of Smoke Screen and creates distance.
- Ghost Scepter Temporarily protects a support from physical attacks if the enemy team doesn’t have a quick dispel.
- Glimmer Cape Helps you survive focused attacks and reposition after leaving the smoke.
- Scythe of Vyse An instant disable leaves no time for Tricks of the Trade.
How to play against Riki at different stages
Laning
Riki is vulnerable to constant harassment until he gets his key levels. Keep a supply of regeneration and don’t let him get free last hits. If he’s playing support, place Sentry Wards not only in the camp but also along the path between the lane and the nearest rune.
Midgame
The whole team should buy detection instead of putting the cost on one support. Place Sentry Wards after a fight has started or under the protection of your allies, so Riki can’t remove them in advance. Don’t move through dark parts of the map alone.
After placing a Sentry Ward, protect it instead of having the whole team move forward. Riki often waits for the support to be alone, removes the detection, and only then starts a fight.
Late game
Protect your back line with several areas of True Sight and keep a Force Staff ready for a hero caught in Smoke Screen. Don’t chase Riki without vision: he wants to spread out your team and return to the support who falls behind. Respond to his first jump with an instant disable.
Keep several sources of True Sight on different heroes. One Dust of Appearance can be removed or survived with Tricks of the Trade, so a backup detection method is essential.
