Meepo can farm quickly with several clones, catch lone heroes, and take buildings before opponents can buy the items they need. But this army has a weak point: killing just one Meepo is enough to kill the others. Let’s look at which heroes can exploit this vulnerability, what to buy against Meepo, and how to disrupt him at different stages of the game.
Hero Characteristics
Divided We Stand creates clones that Meepo can control separately. He spreads them across lanes and the jungle, then brings them together with Poof when attacked. Multiple Earthbinds can keep a target trapped in nets for a long time. Up close, Meepo is dangerous for more than just his damage: Ransack helps him restore health through his attacks.
The hero’s main advantage is how quickly he gains levels and items. While one clone last-hits creeps in a lane, the others clear the jungle. However, AoE damage and control can hit several Meepos at once. If you separate one from the others and quickly finish him off, his big farming advantage won’t save him. With Aghanim’s Scepter, Meepo gets Megameepo, which helps him survive a dangerous moment, so don’t count on a single burst combo to work throughout the game.
Best Heroes Against Meepo
Meepo is usually picked in position 2—the mid lane: he needs to level quickly to get his clones and accelerate his farming. Heroes who can hit multiple targets, prevent the clones from escaping with Poof, or quickly kill one of them are useful against him.
Carry
- Sven hits several Meepos at once thanks to Great Cleave. With God’s Strength active, he can quickly break through a group of clones, while Storm Hammer helps keep them close.
- Ursa quickly stacks Fury Swipes damage on one clone. She doesn’t need to deal with the whole group: her allies just need to hold the chosen Meepo in place while Ursa finishes him off.
Mid
- Kunkka hits clones with Tidebringer and makes it difficult for Meepo to comfortably stand near creeps. Torrent and Ghostship provide AoE control, while X Marks the Spot can bring back a fleeing target.
- Leshrac deals constant AoE damage with Pulse Nova and can stun several Meepos with Split Earth. In a fight, it benefits him when the clones group around him, but approaching them first without defensive items is dangerous.
Offlaner
- Axe catches a group of clones with Berserker’s Call. Their frequent attacks trigger Counter Helix, and Culling Blade lets him finish off the most wounded Meepo.
- Underlord covers clones with Firestorm and reduces their attack damage with Atrophy Aura. Pit of Malice prevents Meepo from escaping with Poof and gives the team time to choose a target.
Support
- Earthshaker punishes Meepo for grouping his clones together: near several heroes, Echo Slam deals especially high damage. Fissure can also help separate a wounded clone from the others.
- Elder Titan gets a powerful buff from Astral Spirit when it passes through several Meepos. Natural Order weakens their defenses, while Echo Stomp helps set up Earth Splitter and the allies’ attack.
Hard Support
- Winter Wyvern forces the clones to attack each other with Winter’s Curse. Cold Embrace can save an ally from their attacks, but it does not protect against Poof damage.
- Witch Doctor disrupts a group of clones’ movement and attacks with Paralyzing Cask. Maledict helps finish off a chosen Meepo after the team deals damage; it’s best to use it before your allies’ main burst combo.
What to Buy Against Meepo
- Black King Bar protects against new Earthbinds while active and reduces magic damage. Meepo’s attacks are still dangerous, so don’t stand among the clones without support.
- Ghost Scepter gives a support a reprieve from physical attacks. Keep Poof in mind: while in ghost form, you take increased magic damage.
- Force Staff helps push an ally away from the clones and avoid the next net. One push may not be enough if Meepo has already surrounded the target.
- Shiva’s Guard provides armor, slows nearby enemies’ attacks, and reduces their health regeneration. Its active ability hits several clones at once.
- Scythe of Vyse lets you catch one Meepo and prevent him from escaping with Poof while the team deals damage.
- Mjollnir is useful for heroes with high attack speed: its lightning hits nearby clones, and its active shield on an ally punishes Meepo for attacking frequently.
How to Play Against Meepo at Different Stages
Laning
Pressure Meepo before he gains additional levels and spreads his clones through the jungle. If you can, hit him with abilities along with the creep wave. When he leaves the lane, check the nearby camps under vision and with backup: simply leaving him the jungle after winning mid lets him quickly make up for lost ground.
Midgame
Watch for Blink Dagger and don’t enter the dark part of the map alone. Before a fight, agree on which clone to attack: spreading your damage gives Meepo more chances to pull the wounded ones away. If he uses Megameepo and you can’t kill him quickly, switch to Meepo’s accessible allies and save your control for when he splits up.
Late Game
Keep supports with counter-initiation abilities behind your core heroes. If Meepo starts by killing Shaker or Wyvern, no one will be left to make use of the counterpick. Check his items before a fight: once he buys save items, one stun may not be enough. Don’t drag out a chase after a healthy clone if there’s another one nearby that your team can finish off.
