Ogre can withstand attacks for a long time, constantly harass opponents in lane, and land several stuns in a row at the right moment. Even without many kills, he remains useful by buffing his allies. In this article, we'll look at heroes that play well against Ogre, items to counter his spells, and ways to avoid depending on whether Multicast is lucky or unlucky.

Hero Characteristics

Fireblast stuns a target, Ignite slows and deals damage over time, and Bloodlust speeds up an ally and increases their attack speed. Multicast allows abilities and some targeted items to trigger multiple times. So the danger comes not only from Ogre himself, but also from the hero he helps attack freely.

Ogre has a lot of health and armor, so ordinary trading often goes in his favor. However, he has trouble repositioning quickly and dealing with large numbers of illusions. Dispels remove Ignite and Bloodlust, while magic damage protection helps you survive his spell combo. If Ogre's team can't follow up the stun with attacks, some of his pressure disappears.

Best Heroes Against Ogre Magi

Ogre is usually picked as a position 5 — a hard support, though he also appears as a position 4. Dispels, illusions, and heroes that can withstand the initial lockdown and then keep fighting are useful against him.

Carry

  • Phantom Lancer forces Ogre to search for the real hero among the illusions. Doppelganger dispels Ignite, while the copies make it harder to use targeted spells effectively.
  • Slark activates Dark Pact in advance to dispel Fireblast's stun and Ignite's slow. In a prolonged fight, he can also gain Essence Shift stacks by attacking the durable Ogre.

Mid

  • Viper gradually wears Ogre down with magic damage and slows him. The magic resistance from Corrosive Skin helps him withstand return spells, while Viper Strike weakens passive abilities with Break.
  • Puck can avoid targeted attacks with Phase Shift and reposition with Illusory Orb. Waning Rift makes it harder for Ogre to immediately continue his spell combo.

Offlaner

  • Underlord can hit Ogre with Firestorm, which also deals damage based on his max health. He can also conveniently build team items that provide magic resistance.
  • Dark Seer deals damage with Ion Shell without constantly trading attacks. Surge helps allies escape Ignite's slow, though Fireblast's stun still needs to be taken into account.

Support

  • Hoodwink keeps Ogre close to a tree with Bushwhack. Sharpshooter adds heavy damage and Break, weakening his passive mechanics for its duration.
  • Earth Spirit can close the gap, apply control, and silence Ogre with Geomagnetic Grip. He prevents Ogre from safely standing behind an ally and casting his spells again.

Hard Support

  • Oracle dispels Ignite from an ally and Bloodlust from an enemy with Fortune's End. Fate's Edict protects against magic damage, while False Promise helps a target survive a chain of stuns.
  • Abaddon dispels Ignite and a stun from an ally with Aphotic Shield. This is especially useful when Ogre is counting on keeping one target locked down for his carry.

What to Build Against Ogre Magi

  • Magic Stick helps restore resources in lane, where Ogre often uses spells near you.
  • Lotus Orb dispels Ignite when cast and reflects targeted spells. The reflection itself does not prevent them from hitting the protected target.
  • Black King Bar protects against Ogre's stuns for its duration and reduces magic damage. Activate the item before the chain of lockdown begins.
  • Pipe of Insight helps the entire team withstand magic damage from Ogre's abilities and those of his allies.
  • Glimmer Cape lets you protect an ally who has already been stunned. It's especially useful if the enemies are counting on finishing them off with a magic damage combo.
  • Manta Style dispels Ignite from its owner and creates illusions. It suits carries who can also use the item for other purposes in the match.
  • Eul's Scepter of Divinity lets you dispel Ignite from yourself and wait out a dangerous moment. When used on an enemy, it can dispel Bloodlust.

How to Play Against Ogre Magi at Different Stages

Laning

Don't feel obligated to out-trade Ogre with regular attacks. If it's better to hit his ally or secure creeps, take that opportunity. Bring health regeneration to lane so Ignite doesn't force you to keep backing away from the wave. When Ogre comes after you, consider whether his ally can follow up on the attack: his health pool alone doesn't make every move he makes dangerous.

Midgame

Keep a hero with a save away from Fireblast's initial target. After Ogre has used his combo, you can keep fighting if your team still has health and important abilities available. Watch who has Bloodlust: sometimes it's better to stop the buffed carry than to spend a long time trying to kill Ogre himself.

Late Game

Check Ogre's inventory. After he buys Scythe of Vyse, his lockdown becomes more dangerous, even if his own damage no longer seems high. Don't show all your supports near the main target, and save dispels for important effects. If Ogre is ahead of his team, catch him, but don't spend all your ultimates on it without a good reason.
