Sand King hides in the sand, starts fights quickly, and deals heavy area damage. Let’s look at which heroes can find Sand King in Sand Storm, who can survive his combo, and which items can disrupt his initiation.

Hero Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths: Sand King is effective because he combines a long-range stun, sustained damage, and a powerful teamfight ultimate. Sand Storm helps him defend the lane and wait out dangerous moments, while Burrowstrike starts fights through multiple targets. Caustic Finale punishes tightly packed creep waves.

Weaknesses: The hero depends on mana and positioning, and struggles against True Sight, silences, and fast burst damage. If his initiation is survived, it can be difficult for him to re-enter the fight.

Best Heroes Against Sand King

Sand King usually plays in the offlane, and sometimes as a position four. Heroes with vision, long-lasting control, and the ability to avoid standing near infected creeps are useful against him.

Carry

  • Juggernaut Blade Fury lets him withstand magic damage and not fear Burrowstrike, while Healing Ward sustains the team after Epicenter.
  • Lifestealer Rage protects him from Sand King’s main combo, Feast helps him fight a durable offlaner, and Infest provides another way to survive an initiation.

Mid

  • Zeus Lightning Bolt reveals the area around Sand Storm, while his long-range spells let him stay out of danger.
  • Leshrac His sustained area damage reaches Sand King in the sand, while Diabolic Edict forces him to leave his safe position.

Offlaner

  • Underlord His large health pool helps him survive Sand King’s spell combo, Pit of Malice catches Sand King after Burrowstrike, and Firestorm controls the area covered by the sand.
  • Slardar Corrosive Haze grants True Sight and prevents Sand King from hiding in Sand Storm. A chain of stuns disrupts his Epicenter setup.

Support

  • Nyx Assassin Spiked Carapace is easy to trigger with Sand Storm or Epicenter, interrupting the combo and stunning the initiator.
  • Rubick He can lift Sand King before he initiates, and is especially dangerous when stealing Burrowstrike or Epicenter with increased cast range.

Hard Support

  • Disruptor Glimpse returns Sand King after Burrowstrike, while Static Storm prevents him from retreating into Sand Storm.
  • Oracle Fate's Edict protects an ally from magic damage, while False Promise saves the main target after Sand King’s full combo.

How to Play Against Sand King at Different Stages

Laning

Don’t stand near a creep that is about to be affected by Caustic Finale. Bring a Sentry Ward and force Sand King to leave Sand Storm. When Burrowstrike is used to farm, the hero has almost no defense against a targeted attack.

Mid Game

Watch the flanks and don’t group all five heroes in a narrow area. Sand King wants to start the fight from the fog of war with Blink Dagger. An initiator who is revealed in advance is much weaker, so a deep Observer Ward and a quick silence are more important than extra damage.

Deal damage over time before an expected fight to disable Blink Dagger. Even a single long-range ability forces Sand King to start the fight in a less favorable way.

Late Game

Keep your cores and supports spaced out so one combo doesn’t hit the whole team. After the first Burrowstrike, use dispels and magic resistance, then immediately respond with disables. Without the ability to retreat into the sand, Sand King quickly dies to physical damage.

Don’t use Dust of Appearance before Sand Storm appears. First wait for him to retreat into the sand, then reveal the area and keep focusing him while he is disabled.
