Shadow Demon saves allies, creates dangerous illusions, and dispels positive effects. In this article, we’ll discuss how to avoid giving Shadow Demon powerful carry copies, how to withstand his damage over time, and who can reach the backline.
Hero’s Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths: Shadow Demon is especially good against heroes with powerful illusions and important buffs. Disruption can either save an ally or set up a kill on an enemy; Shadow Poison provides vision and stacks damage; Demonic Purge slows and dispels positive effects.
Weaknesses: However, the hero is fragile, lacks instant area control, and depends heavily on good positioning. If you jump on him first, he usually won’t be able to use his full set of abilities.
Best Heroes Against Shadow Demon
Shadow Demon almost always plays in the fourth or fifth position. Counterpicks should be able to quickly find him behind his team and prevent him from getting much value out of Disruption.
Carry
- Riki Blink Strike and Smoke Screen instantly disable the support. Riki’s illusions aren’t as dangerous to his own team.
- Slark Dark Pact dispels Shadow Poison and some forms of control with the right timing, while Pounce prevents Shadow Demon from repositioning.
Mid
- Queen of Pain Easily jumps past the frontline and kills a fragile target with a single spell combo. Disruption only briefly delays the follow-up attack.
- Storm Spirit Reaches the support from a huge distance and holds them in place before they can use their defensive abilities.
Offlaner
- Night Stalker Finds the backline in the dark and prevents Shadow Demon from using Disruption with a long silence.
- Legion Commander Duel prevents the target from being saved in response. A Blink Dagger combo quickly removes a key support from the fight.
Support
- Nyx Assassin Sneaks up on the target, while Spiked Carapace punishes Shadow Poison and other area damage.
- Earth Spirit Quickly flanks and silences multiple targets at once, preventing them from using a defensive combo.
Hard Support
- Silencer Global Silence disrupts the timing for Disruption and Demonic Purge.
- Abaddon Aphotic Shield dispels Shadow Poison and helps an ally withstand its accumulated damage, while Borrowed Time makes him harder to focus.
What to Buy Against Shadow Demon
- Black King Bar Protects against Shadow Poison, but Demonic Purge remains a dangerous form of control.
- Lotus Orb Dispels accumulated negative effects and reflects targeted abilities.
- Pipe of Insight Reduces the team’s incoming area magic damage.
- Orchid Malevolence Prevents him from using Disruption in response to an initiation.
- Blink Dagger Helps an initiator reach the support’s position in the back.
- Force Staff Gets an ally out of danger after Disruption ends.
How to Play Against Shadow Demon at Different Stages
Laning
Don’t let Shadow Demon stack Shadow Poison for free: change your direction of movement and don’t stand next to your lane partner. After a few stacks, move away until they expire. The hero himself struggles against direct aggression if Disruption has already been used.
Midgame
Don’t start focusing a protected target while Disruption is available. Force Shadow Demon to use his save, then switch to him or another hero. Try not to expose a carry with especially powerful illusions to being copied.
Keep track of Shadow Poison stacks and don’t let your opponent hit several heroes at once. Sometimes a brief retreat until the effect ends completely removes the threat of a burst release.
Late Game
In the late game, Demonic Purge can dispel a core’s key buff. Spread out and look for Shadow Demon before the main fight begins. If you can’t kill him quickly, at least force him to use Disruption on himself—then his allies will be left without a save.
After Disruption, don’t have the whole team stand around the point where the target will reappear. Have one hero ready to use control, and spread the others out so they don’t get caught by the follow-up combo.
