Skywrath Mage can kill a target under Ancient Seal and Mystic Flare in a second. Let’s look at which heroes can survive Skywrath Mage’s magical burst, who can dispel the silence, and which inexpensive items prevent him from getting easy kills.

Hero’s Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths: Skywrath Mage excels at dealing massive magical damage from long range. Ancient Seal both silences its target and increases incoming magical damage, while Concussive Shot helps him find the nearest target. Mystic Flare is especially dangerous against a single controlled hero.

Weaknesses: Skywrath Mage pays for this with very low health and armor. He depends on mana, farms poorly without participating in kills, and has almost no way to escape a direct initiation.

Best Heroes Against Skywrath Mage

Skywrath Mage usually plays in the fourth or fifth position, and sometimes goes mid. Counters should have magic resistance, the ability to close in quickly, or a way to dispel Ancient Seal.

Carry

  • Juggernaut Blade Fury protects against most of Skywrath Mage’s burst, while Omnislash quickly kills the squishy mage.
  • Anti-Mage High magic resistance and Counterspell make targeted spells difficult to land, while Blink closes the distance instantly.

Midlaner

  • Huskar Berserker's Blood helps him withstand magical damage, while Life Break prevents Skywrath Mage from keeping a safe distance.
  • Viper Corrosive Skin reduces magical damage and punishes frequent spell use, while slows make it difficult to retreat.

Offlaner

  • Abaddon Aphotic Shield dispels Ancient Seal from an ally, while Borrowed Time makes it difficult to kill Abaddon with a single burst.
  • Centaur Warrunner His large health pool lets him survive the combo, while Stampede gets his team out of Mystic Flare's area.

Support

  • Nyx Assassin Spiked Carapace reflects predictable magical damage, while Vendetta lets him find the squishy support first.
  • Clockwerk Hookshot traps Skywrath Mage at close range, where he quickly dies to Battery Assault and the team’s attacks.

Hard Support

  • Oracle Fate's Edict provides enormous protection from magic, Fortune's End dispels Ancient Seal, and False Promise saves a target from a full combo.
  • Omniknight Repel protects a key hero from negative effects, while Purification both heals and punishes enemies for getting too close.

How to Play Against Skywrath Mage at Different Stages

Laning

Bring a Magic Stick and Infused Raindrops, and don’t stay in lane at half health. Skywrath Mage is strong at harassing, but very vulnerable to a counterattack. If he moves far forward to use Arcane Bolt, approach from two sides and force him to spend mana retreating.

Mid Game

Don’t move around alone without a defensive item: Skywrath Mage only needs an ally’s control ability to land Mystic Flare accurately. Keep Force Staff ready in fights and immediately dispel Ancient Seal from the primary target. After using his combo, he is barely a threat and is easy to kill.

If an ally is caught in Mystic Flare, enter the area with them or push them out with Force Staff: splitting the damage often saves the target.

Late Game

In the late game, keep an eye on Skywrath Mage’s control items. Don’t let him spot your carry first, and keep supports in different positions. A quick dive into the back line forces him to use his spells defensively instead of getting a kill.

Check whether Skywrath Mage has bought an item for instant control. A defensive Linken's Sphere or Lotus Orb may be more important than extra damage on a core.
