Shadow Shaman disables one target for a long time and quickly destroys structures with Mass Serpent Ward. Let’s look at the heroes who can stop Shaman from channeling Shackles, save an ally from his control, and punish his low mobility.

Hero strengths and weaknesses

Strengths: Shaman has two reliable disables and deals heavy damage with Ether Shock in lane. If his team wins a fight, Mass Serpent Ward quickly turns that advantage into a destroyed tower or a killed Roshan.

Weaknesses: The hero pays for this power with Hex’s short cast range, low mobility, and the need to stand still during Shackles. Any quick counter-disable interrupts his main combo.

Best heroes against Shadow Shaman

Shadow Shaman most often plays position four or five. Mobile heroes, instant saves, and abilities that can interrupt Shackles from a safe distance are good counters.

Carry

  • Juggernaut Blade Fury lets him move through regular disables, while Omnislash quickly kills an isolated support.
  • Riki He attacks from behind and traps Shaman in Smoke Screen. Tricks of the Trade helps him wait out a counter-Hex.

Mid

  • Puck He dodges targeted abilities and closes the distance instantly. Dream Coil prevents Shaman from retreating after a failed attempt to disable him.
  • Storm Spirit He reaches the back line from a great distance and kills a fragile target before the long Shackles channel begins.

Offlaner

  • Tidehunter Kraken Shell helps remove regular debuffs after taking enough damage, while Ravage interrupts the channel and responds with area-of-effect control.
  • Night Stalker He finds Shaman at night and prevents him from using his entire spell kit with a long silence.

Support

  • Clockwerk Rocket Flare reveals Shaman’s position, Hookshot initiates the focus, and Battery Assault constantly interrupts Shackles.
  • Rubick Telekinesis interrupts the channel from a great distance. Stolen Hex, Shackles, and Mass Serpent Ward are very dangerous for Shaman himself.

Hard support

  • Abaddon Aphotic Shield removes Hex and Shackles from an ally if cast in time, and lets the team immediately turn the fight around.
  • Oracle Fate's Edict protects an ally from magic damage, while False Promise saves a target Shaman has spent his entire combo on.

What to build against Shadow Shaman

  • Black King Bar Prevents Shaman from stopping a core with regular spells.
  • Lotus Orb Reflects targeted disables and removes some debuffs.
  • Force Staff Helps an ally escape the Mass Serpent Ward ring and creates distance.
  • Glimmer Cape Protects a target during Shackles and gives the team time to respond.
  • Aeon Disk Saves a support from a long chain of disables and focus fire.
  • Blink Dagger Lets you reach Shaman on the back line first.

How to play against Shadow Shaman at different stages

Laning

Don’t stand near the ranged creep, so Ether Shock doesn’t hit both your hero and the wave. Shaman has high attack damage, but he’s poor at escaping an attack. Approach him from the side and force him to use his disables defensively instead of on your core.

Mid game

Always keep one hero out of the fight’s front line to interrupt Shackles. After Mass Serpent Ward appears, quickly decide whether you can defend the tower: a prolonged fight near the snakes favors your opponent. The wards themselves can be destroyed with ranged attacks and area damage.

Don’t leave the tower undefended after Mass Serpent Ward is placed. Either kill Shaman and the snakes quickly, or back off so you don’t lose heroes along with the structure.

Late game

Don’t let Shaman approach your core unnoticed and get within Hex range. Defensive vision and proper positioning are more important than chasing the front line. After using both disables, the hero is almost defenseless—that’s the best time to counterattack.

Keep an eye on his Blink Dagger. Defensive area damage disables the item and prevents Shaman from starting a chain of disables from the perfect position.
