Keeper of the Light is a ranged hero who can quickly clear waves and provide allies with mana. Illuminate deals damage across a large area, while Chakra Magic helps the team use abilities more often. This article looks at KotL’s weaknesses, counters for each role, suitable items, and ways to play against him in the laning stage, midgame, and late game.

Hero’s Characteristics

Keeper of the Light is strong when he can safely cast Illuminate and help his team from a distance. Chakra Magic is especially useful for heroes with important abilities on cooldown. In teamfights, Will-O-Wisp prevents enemies from moving and attacking freely, while Spirit Form expands his capabilities. But the hero himself is vulnerable to sudden attacks: without items, he has no reliable way to escape pursuit instantly.

Keeper of the Light likes to stay in the backline and prepare Illuminate in advance along the enemies’ path of movement. If the team changes its angle of attack, his abilities may miss their target. Silence and quick disables prevent him from using his saving abilities, while highly mobile heroes can easily reach him. Don’t try to pass through a narrow part of the map while Will-O-Wisp is ready: back off and wait for the enemy to use their abilities.

Best Heroes Against Keeper of the Light

Keeper of the Light is most often picked in position 5 as a hard support or in position 4 as a support. Sometimes he takes mid, using his ability to clear waves quickly. Below are counters for each role that can help reach KotL or prevent him from comfortably influencing fights.

Carry

  • Slark quickly finds KotL and prevents him from staying at a safe distance. Pounce limits his retreat, while Dark Pact dispels some effects. Slark benefits from attacking after Keeper of the Light has used a disable or spent Will-O-Wisp.
  • Phantom Assassin quickly closes the distance with Phantom Strike and forces KotL to use defensive items. Blur helps her approach unseen, but to attack reliably, she needs to know the enemy’s location and avoid jumping into the whole team.

Midlaner

  • Storm Spirit can reach KotL instantly with Ball Lightning. Silence from Orchid Malevolence further prevents him from using abilities, while Storm Spirit’s mobility helps him get out of danger.
  • Queen of Pain dodges Illuminate with Blink and quickly attacks a hero with a small health pool. She can chase KotL along a side route, but needs to watch out for Will-O-Wisp and keep enough mana to retreat.

Offlaner

  • Clockwerk dives into the backline with Hookshot and traps KotL inside Power Cogs. An isolated support can’t freely retreat and continue helping the team. Start the attack when your allies are ready to finish off the target quickly.
  • Legion Commander catches KotL with Blink Dagger and Duel. A quick initiation prevents him from calmly using defensive abilities. Press the Attack helps remove some disables from an ally if the enemy manages to initiate first.

Support

  • Nyx Assassin finds KotL and stuns him with Impale. Vendetta lets Nyx approach the support unnoticed, while Mana Burn punishes the hero for his high Intelligence. To secure the kill, it’s important to let your allies know about the target you’ve found in advance.
  • Silencer prevents Keeper of the Light from using abilities with silence. Global Silence is useful when the team initiates a fight and needs to stop KotL from saving an ally or using Will-O-Wisp.

Hard Support

  • Disruptor keeps KotL within the team’s reach with Glimpse and prevents him from using abilities with Static Storm. Place vision on the side approaches to spot an attempted retreat in time.
  • Shadow Demon can save an ally from KotL’s attack with Disruption. His disables and slow help the team catch a hero trying to escape after using Illuminate.

What to Buy Against Keeper of the Light

  • Orchid Malevolence provides silence and helps prevent KotL from retreating or using defensive abilities.
  • Blink Dagger lets you initiate an attack quickly from an unexpected direction while Keeper of the Light is positioning himself to use Illuminate.
  • Black King Bar helps you get through magic damage and some disables when your team dives into the backline.
  • Glimmer Cape helps an ally survive a magic attack and disappear while retreating.
  • Force Staff lets you pull an ally out of Will-O-Wisp or a dangerous ability area.

How to Play Against Keeper of the Light at Different Stages

Laning

In lane, don’t stand in the same line as the creeps if KotL is preparing Illuminate. Watch the wave’s position and approach the creeps from different sides to make it harder for him to hit both you and your ally at once. His abilities cost mana, so you can apply pressure for a short time after he uses one unsuccessfully. Don’t prolong trades under your own wave if the enemy is regularly helping an ally with Chakra Magic.

Midgame

In the midgame, don’t take obvious narrow routes where KotL can prepare Illuminate or Will-O-Wisp in advance. Use Smoke and detours to approach from the flank. If the hero is positioned behind his allies, don’t start a fight with a frontal attack: first find a way to reach the support. Keep track of his movements and don’t leave lanes unattended while the enemy is clearing waves quickly.

Late Game

In the late game, Keeper of the Light can buy time for his team and stop a push through a narrow passage. Don’t group up near Will-O-Wisp or give him the chance to calmly cast Illuminate across the whole team. Save your disables for when he appears in sight, then attack quickly. If KotL has used his important abilities, use the lull to take Roshan or push down a lane.
