Slark dispels debuffs, steals attributes, and regenerates when he disappears from enemy vision. Let’s look at who can stop Slark from prolonging fights, which abilities work during Shadow Dance, and how to limit his mobility.
Hero Overview
Strengths: Slark excels in long fights: Essence Shift gradually weakens enemies while making him faster and more dangerous. Dark Pact dispels many debuffs, Pounce tethers a target, and Shadow Dance hides him from targeted attacks and triggers regeneration.
Weaknesses: Slark’s weaknesses are his low health before he gets items, poor farming unless he participates in fights, and vulnerability to instant disables, AoE damage, and effects that Dark Pact cannot dispel in time.
Best Heroes Against Slark
Slark almost always plays in the safe lane. Against him, you need heroes with AoE damage, undispellable disables, or the ability to quickly survive his initial attack.
Carry
- Faceless Void Chronosphere cannot be dispelled by Dark Pact and prevents Slark from using Shadow Dance. Slark usually dies to the team’s damage during the dome.
- Bloodseeker Rupture limits Pounce and pursuit, while Thirst helps track Slark at low health when Shadow Dance is not active.
Mid
- Leshrac Continuous AoE damage works even without selecting a visible target and prevents Slark from fighting safely inside Shadow Dance.
- Puck Dream Coil limits his jumps, while Puck’s high mobility prevents Slark from building up Essence Shift on a single target for long.
Offlaner
- Axe Berserker's Call catches Slark before Dark Pact, Counter Helix deals damage while he attacks, and Culling Blade finishes him off through his attempt to regenerate.
- Legion Commander Duel prevents Slark from entering Shadow Dance if started at the right time, while Press the Attack helps an ally escape Pounce and survive focus fire.
Support
- Disruptor Glimpse returns Slark after Pounce, while Static Storm with Aghanim's Scepter prevents him from using defensive abilities and items.
- Grimstroke Stroke of Fate and Ink Swell deal AoE damage, while Soulbind makes it harder for Slark to separate freely from an ally.
Hard Support
- Shadow Demon Disruption lets you wait out part of his attack, while Demonic Purge keeps slowing him and makes it harder for Slark to escape even after a regular dispel.
- Winter Wyvern Cold Embrace saves a target from physical attacks, while Winter's Curse can hold Slark in place until your team focuses him in return.
What to Build Against Slark
- Force Staff Helps an ally leave a dangerous position and create distance once Pounce ends.
- Ghost Scepter Protects a support from physical attacks and prevents Slark from quickly building up Essence Shift.
- Heaven's Halberd Disarms Slark and slows his attribute accumulation.
- Scythe of Vyse Instant disable is difficult to anticipate with Dark Pact.
- Shiva's Guard Reduces regeneration and attack speed, and helps check an area with AoE damage.
- Bloodthorn After Dark Pact, it silences Slark and helps quickly focus down the fragile target.
How to Play Against Slark at Different Stages
Laning
Don’t let trades drag on: a few Essence Shift attacks can turn even an even lane into a losing one. Harass Slark in short bursts and force him to use Dark Pact early. After he uses it, a small window opens for reliable control.
Mid Game
Place defensive wards on approaches, but remember: passive regeneration tells Slark whether he is in vision. It’s better to catch him with Smoke and instant disables. Don’t chase him alone through the dark parts of the map.
Watch Dark Pact’s animation. Don’t use an important stun while he is dispelling: wait for it to trigger, then lock Slark down.
Late Game
Don’t give Slark a long fight against a single target. Use saves, switch targets, and force him to activate Shadow Dance prematurely. AoE damage continues to work inside his ultimate, so plan in advance where your team will cover the battlefield.
Shadow Dance does not make Slark invulnerable. Cover the area with AoE spells, set up obstacles, and don’t scatter alone until the ultimate ends.
