Sniper deals enormous damage from a distance and forces enemies to move through Shrapnel. Simply buying armor is not enough against Sniper: you need to reach him, cut him off from his team, and prevent him from shooting freely. Let’s look at suitable picks and items.

Hero Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths: Sniper wins positional fights thanks to his attack range, Headshot, and Shrapnel’s slowing area. Take Aim lets him stay far away from dangerous abilities, while Assassinate finishes off fleeing targets.

Weaknesses: The hero himself is slow, fragile, and has almost no reliable escape. If an enemy gets close or attacks from several directions, it is difficult for Sniper to maintain a comfortable distance.

Best Heroes Against Sniper

Sniper most often plays in the mid lane, but is also picked as a carry and occasionally as a support. The best counters quickly get past the frontline or start a fight right on top of him.

Carry

  • Spectre Instantly appears next to Sniper anywhere in a fight and prevents him from shooting from the backline without consequences.
  • Phantom Assassin Phantom Strike closes the distance, Blur helps against regular attacks, and critical damage quickly kills a fragile target.

Mid

  • Storm Spirit Ball Lightning completely negates the advantage of range. After level six, it is dangerous for Sniper to stay alone in lane.
  • Ember Spirit Quickly engages with Fire Remnant, dodges some attacks with Sleight of Fist, and holds enemies in place with Searing Chains.

Offlaner

  • Mars Arena of Blood separates Sniper from his allies and blocks his attacks through the wall, while Bulwark protects the team from frontal fire.
  • Centaur Warrunner Stampede helps the whole team close the distance, while Blink Dagger and Stomp initiate the focus.

Support

  • Nyx Assassin Approaches unseen, deals burst damage, and can retaliate against Shrapnel or Assassinate with Spiked Carapace.
  • Clockwerk Hookshot flies past the frontline, Power Cogs trap Sniper, and Battery Assault prevents him from using abilities freely.

Hard Support

  • Disruptor Glimpse returns Sniper after he tries to retreat, while Kinetic Field and Static Storm prevent him from repositioning.
  • Treant Protector Overgrowth holds the hero in place even across a large area, while Living Armor helps an ally survive ranged attacks.

What to Buy Against Sniper

  • Blink Dagger The main tool for instantly closing the distance.
  • Shadow Blade Lets you approach the backline unseen if the enemy does not have enough vision.
  • Blade Mail On a durable initiator, it forces Sniper to stop firing or take heavy return damage.
  • Heaven's Halberd Temporarily deprives Sniper of his main source of damage.
  • Crimson Guard Reduces frequent physical damage dealt to the whole team.
  • Butterfly Evasion is useful against regular attacks before Sniper gets accuracy.

How to Play Against Sniper at Different Stages

Laning

Don’t stand in Shrapnel constantly, and don’t try to win a long trade at his maximum range. Push the wave, take runes, and call a support to come around from the side. Sniper has a hard time escaping if the attack doesn’t start from the middle of the lane.

Mid Game

Attack from two directions. A direct approach through Shrapnel lets Sniper deal far too much damage for free. Save your Teleportation for when he greedily farms a side lane, and don’t reveal your initiator on the map ahead of time.

Don’t show a hero with Blink Dagger on a wave before a fight. The threat of a hidden initiation forces Sniper to stand farther back and deal less damage even if no attack actually happens.

Late Game

In the late game, Sniper quickly kills even durable heroes, so don’t start a fight by slowly moving toward him. You need an instant initiation or to split the fight. While one hero distracts the frontline, another must prevent Sniper from shooting.

When sieging, don’t try to slowly climb the high ground through Shrapnel. Push the side lanes, force the enemy to split up, and only then look for a quick approach.
