Storm Spirit flies across half the map, catches an isolated target, and becomes almost impossible to catch with a full mana pool. Let’s look at who wins against Storm in the early game, what control can interrupt his mobility, and how to make him waste his mana.
Hero Characteristics
Strengths: Storm is strong thanks to Ball Lightning: while traveling, he is invulnerable, can choose his approach angle, and can quickly escape. Static Remnant speeds up farming, Overload adds slow and damage, and Electric Vortex holds his victim in place.
Weaknesses: The hero’s main resource is mana: a long flight or having his mana burned leaves Storm defenseless. Before level six, he is slow and has no reliable escape, while silence and instant control prevent him from activating his ultimate.
Best Heroes Against Storm Spirit
Storm Spirit almost always plays in the mid lane. Counterpicks should pressure him before level six, burn his mana, or catch him with an instant silence or roots.
Carry
- Anti-Mage Mana Break deprives Storm of his main resource, Blink helps chase him, and Mana Void punishes him for having an empty mana pool.
- Faceless Void Chronosphere leaves him no chance to fly away, while Time Dilation makes frequent ability use less convenient.
Midlaner
- Huskar He pressures the lane heavily and doesn’t let Storm reach level six safely. Storm’s magic damage is often not enough to kill him quickly.
- Puck Dream Coil limits Ball Lightning, Waning Rift applies silence, and a strong lane keeps Storm from building momentum.
Offlaner
- Night Stalker A long silence and vision at night let him find Storm before he can prepare to fly away.
- Legion Commander An instant Duel after Blink Dagger prevents him from casting Ball Lightning, while Press the Attack removes some of the control from an ally.
Support
- Nyx Assassin Mana Burn reduces the mana available for flying, Spiked Carapace catches area damage, and Vendetta creates a constant threat.
- Earthshaker A long-range Fissure blocks his path, and an instant chain of stuns after Blink Dagger leaves no time to use his ultimate.
Hard Support
- Silencer Global Silence lets you catch Storm anywhere in a fight and prevents him from escaping after an aggressive initiation.
- Disruptor Glimpse returns Storm after a short jump, while Static Storm with Aghanim's Scepter disables abilities and items.
What to Buy Against Storm Spirit
- Orchid Malevolence An early silence makes Storm helpless before he gets a dispel.
- Scythe of Vyse Instant control is almost impossible to avoid with a reaction.
- Diffusal Blade Burns mana with regular attacks and limits Ball Lightning’s range.
- Linken's Sphere Protects a vulnerable target from Electric Vortex and some targeted control.
- Lotus Orb Removes Orchid Malevolence and other effects Storm uses to start a kill.
- Aeon Disk Helps a support survive the first round of spells and wait for the team’s help.
How to Play Against Storm Spirit at Different Stages
Laning
Before level six, Storm is slow and vulnerable. Push him under his tower, control the runes, and call your support before he gets Ball Lightning. Keep an eye on his mana: with an empty pool, he can neither attack nor escape.
Midgame
Don’t farm a side lane alone without vision and allied teleport support. Defensive wards should reveal the start of a long flight in advance. After an aggressive initiation, use silence instantly—Storm often expects to escape right after a kill.
Check Storm’s mana before a fight and tell your team how much he has. After a long flight, don’t retreat automatically: a Storm with an empty mana pool is often the easiest target.
Late Game
Don’t have the whole team stand close together: with Aghanim's Scepter, Storm can pull in several targets. At the same time, don’t leave supports completely alone. Force him to make long flights, survive his first round of spells with saves, and attack when he has little mana left.
Don’t group up in one spot against an upgraded Electric Vortex. Keep a small distance between heroes, but remain close enough to help a support quickly after an initiation.
