Sven uses his ultimate, God's Strength, to destroy nearby heroes in just a few hits. Let's look at who can stop Sven from reaching his target, how to dispel his buffs, and how to survive his brief window of massive physical damage.
Hero Characteristics
Strengths: Sven combines a mass stun, high attack damage, and a team-wide movement speed boost with Warcry. Great Cleave punishes tight formations and illusions.
Weaknesses: His weakness is his reliance on God's Strength and his ability to hit his target. Kiting, disarms, dispels, and physical damage protection can make his ultimate go to waste.
Best Heroes Against Sven
Sven almost always plays in the carry position, though he sometimes appears as a support. Counters need to keep their distance, survive his physical damage burst, or remove his buffs.
Carry
- Ursa Enrage reduces incoming damage, while Fury Swipes quickly stack up on Sven if he hasn't managed to kill Ursa first.
- Troll Warlord He can fight one-on-one for a long time, disarm Sven with his axes, and survive the damage peak with Battle Trance.
Mid
- Puck Puck can easily dodge Storm Hammer, keep Sven leashed, and make him spend God's Strength chasing.
- Necrophos Ghost Shroud protects against attacks, while Reaper's Scythe finishes off a tanky hero after he loses health.
Offlaner
- Razor Static Link takes away Sven's most important resource—physical damage—and Razor's high movement speed helps him maintain the link.
- Brewmaster Cyclone removes Sven from the fight for the duration of God's Strength, while Dispel removes beneficial effects.
Support
- Shadow Demon Disruption saves a target, while Demonic Purge dispels buffs and makes it harder for Sven to continue the chase.
- Windranger Windrun protects against normal attacks, Shackleshot holds Sven in place, and strong physical focus forces him to defend himself.
Hard Support
- Oracle False Promise lets an ally survive a damage burst, while Fate's Edict prevents Storm Hammer from dealing magic damage.
- Winter Wyvern Cold Embrace completely protects an ally from attacks, while Winter's Curse turns Sven's strength against his team.
What to Buy Against Sven
- Ghost Scepter Temporarily protects you from physical attacks.
- Heaven's Halberd Disarms Sven during his main buff.
- Eul's Scepter of Divinity Lifts a hero into the air and wastes time from God's Strength.
- Force Staff Creates distance after Sven initiates.
- Lotus Orb Reflects Storm Hammer and provides armor.
- Butterfly Adds evasion until Sven gets accuracy.
How to Play Against Sven at Different Stages
Laning
Don't stand near creeps or your lane partner, so Great Cleave doesn't give Sven free harass. He's vulnerable to a counterattack after using Storm Hammer. Don't take a prolonged trade under Warcry. Keep the wave closer to your tower: that way, your opponent has to move farther from safety to farm. Before making an aggressive move, check whether the next enemy wave is approaching—extra creeps often change the outcome of a trade.
Mid Game
Keep an eye on God's Strength: after Sven activates it, retreat and use saves instead of trying to trade hits fairly. Re-engage when the buff expires.
In the mid game, assign roles for the fight in advance. Don't spend both defensive tools on the very first effect—one of them should be saved for the follow-up in the combo. After a favorable trade, take vision and the nearest objective right away; otherwise, the won fight won't change the map. Before a fight, check which enemies have shown on the side lanes and who has a Teleport Scroll ready. Make a move only when you know how many heroes can arrive to help and which route they'll take.
Late Game
Don't stand close together, so one hit doesn't catch multiple heroes. Save your disarm and physical damage protection for the main core, and your dispel for Warcry and other buffs.
In the late game, one positioning mistake matters more than a small gold difference. After a failed attack, don't chase blindly: restore vision, wait for cooldowns, and only then move on to Roshan or the buildings. Leave one hero on a safe wave so the enemy can't get a free path to your base. Don't show your main initiator on a lane before a decisive push. Let another hero push the lane safely while your control stays in the fog: an unknown position often makes the enemy retreat without a fight.
